Trigger Point Therapy

Trigger Point Therapy

What is trigger point therapy?
Trigger point therapy revolves around the research and techniques developed by Dr. Janet Travell (John F. Kennedy’s personal physician).  Travell joined Dr. David Simmons and they together formed the myofascial trigger point model.  Trigger points are thought to be painful areas in muscle tissue which become a cause of chronic musculoskeletal pain.  At times these trigger points are localized while others refer pain to another area.
As a go-to method in most massage education settings, massage therapists are taught to work to reduce these painful areas by applying manual trigger point therapy, a concentrated pressure, with the goal of improving blood flow to the sensitive areas in muscle tissue.
Understanding of medicine and science, however, has since changed.   Pain scientists and researchers are using updated theories and models.  The therapists at Armory Massage Therapy strive to stay on top of the latest research in evidence based practice and integrate this knowledge to provide you with the best massage therapy sessions we can offer.
